Wind foiling is much more than a trend
The RS:One Convertible European Open Championships occurred in Penmarc'h in France at the beginning of July 2017. It was the first official International wind foiling competition to be organized.
Wind foiling is thus officially a new windsurf discipline!
The RS: One Convertible Class has confirmed international events until 2020. This class will be exciting to follow, as wind foiling is booming and trendy.
Many more competitors will probably be attracted in competing in this new windsurf discipline and this will help growing the popularity of wind foiling sport among a large public.
About the competition
Five intense days of wind foil ended with a domination from french windsurfers, however some nations like USA, Denmark and Russia showed that they will offer hard competition in the next competitions.
The final battle in the men’s class, between Thomas Goyard (FRA) and Sebastian Kornum (DEN), turned into a very exciting heat. They impressed everybody with their foiling skills, frantastic average speed (more than 24 knots!) and competitivness.
At the end, Thomas Goyard came out as the first European wind foil champion ever, together with Maelle Guibaud (FRA), Corto Dumond (FRA) and Lola Sorin (FRA) in the other classes.

The next large event in the RS: One Convertible class is the WORLD CUP, to be held in the Azores in November.
Update October 2019:
The RS: One Convertible class is now history. We are looking ahead and at the time we write this update, windfoiling is about to becoming an Olympic class. Final decision will be made by World Sailing's board at the end of 2019. Read more about windfoiling's Olympic destiny here.
